New “Railhead Building” Honors City’s Railroad Heritage
A new chapter in local development now carries a name rooted in history. Prior Lake resident Lauren Fries has been selected as the winner of the community building naming contest, with the winning entry: Railhead Building.
The newly named Railhead Building is located at 4636 Colorado Street SE, Prior Lake, adjacent to Premier Dance Studio and directly across County Road 21 from the Prior Lake Library. The Railhead Building’s anchor tenant is Chula's, an authentic Latin food and spirits restaurant concept. Ample parking is available across Colorado Street and the transit stop on County Road 21 is on the north side of the building.
Additionally, over 2500 square feet of space is available for lease. This project was developed by Stanley & Wencl Commercial Construction, a respected name in general contracting and design-build services.
The name “Railhead Building” pays tribute to the historical significance of the Milwaukee Road railroad, which once ran through Prior Lake. The Milwaukee Road (Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad) played a key role in developing Prior Lake during the late 19th century. A line passing through Prior Lake was constructed starting in 1868, connecting it to nearby cities like Shakopee and Farmington. The railroad played a vital role in the city’s early development, serving as a key transportation and commerce route that connected the community to broader regional markets.
Lauren shared her reasoning for the name: “The term “railhead” historically refers to a point where goods are transferred between rail and other transportation—symbolizing movement, growth, and economic activity—values that continue to define Prior Lake today.”
The contest drew strong participation from the community, with 316 citizens submitting name concepts. With entries limited to a maximum of three per person, the contest generated nearly 900 unique name ideas, reflecting broad community engagement and enthusiasm.
After careful consideration, the winning name was selected by the judging panel consisting of Dan Stanley, Manny Perez, and the Mayor of Prior Lake, Kirt Briggs.
As the contest winner, Fries will receive a prize package that includes $150 in cash plus a $150 gift card to Chula’s, recognizing her contribution to the project and the community.

Also, a commemorative cast architectural plaque featuring the new name and historical basis will be installed on the building in the coming weeks.
“We were impressed by the creativity and thoughtfulness behind the submissions,” said the judging panel in a joint statement. “Lauren’s entry stood out for its meaningful connection to Prior Lake’s heritage while also capturing the forward-looking spirit of this new development.”
The Railhead Building name reflects both the city’s rich past and its continued momentum as a growing and vibrant community.
